Deep fried spicy potato sandwich recipe

As we’re edging towards the end of Ramadan, I wanted to share a delicious recipe with you which I learnt from a fab aunt. Now I’ve written my fair share of healthy recipes (Turkish aubergine shakshuka, carb free prawn, mango and avocado salad, raw courgette ribbons) so I felt that it was time for something decidedly greasy.  And you don’t get much more greasy, indulgent and delicious than a deep-fried sandwich filled with spicy potato. And yes, it is waaaay tastier than it sounds. Think of it like a fluffy vegetable samosa.

The bread crisps up with a golden batter. The sandwich filling, with its spicy potato is laced with ketchup. Now, if you haven’t guessed, this recipe doesn’t offer much nutritional value. There is nothing fancy about it. It won’t make you trend on Instagram. But honestly, it’s the hidden gem of naughty food.  And if you’ve been fasting this month, you deserve something deep fried. It’s a gift you should give yourself.

Potato filled fried bread

When I first tried it, I think I had more than my polite share (read: about 20 slices). So I kind of figured that it would be rude not to share the recipe. So here it is…

Deep fried spicy potato sandwich recipe

Ingredients

For the spicy potato filling –

  • 3 medium sized potatoes, cut into small pieces
  • ½ tsp Mustard seeds
  • 2-3 green chillies (depending on your heat tolerance)
  • 1/2cm grated ginger
  • Pinch garam masala
  • Pinch haldi (turmeric powder)
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • Fresh coriander for dressing

For the batter –

  • 1 cup chickpea flour
  • Pinch salt
  • Pinch haldi (turmeric powder)
  • Pinch garam masala
  • Pinch red chilli powder

For the sandwich –

  • Some slices of white bread (I tried brown bread one time and it didn’t really work)
  • Squirt of tomato ketchup (per sandwich)

Deep fried spicy potato sandwich method

  • Cut and boil small pieces of potato (with pinch of salt) and mash
  • Then in a separate frying pan, pop some mustard seeds in oil
  • Add green chillis, ginger, garam masala haldi (pinch) salt to taste
  • Then take off heat and add bit of lemon juice and fresh coriander
  • For the batter, mix chick pea flour with warm water and make it a thin consistency
  • Add a bit of salt, turmeric, garam masala and red chilli powder just to flavour the bread when you batter it
  • For the sandwich, spread ketchup on one side of one slice
  • Spread potato mix on the other slice and slap together
  • Cover in batter and fry until golden brown

So there you go, deep fried spicy potato sandwich recipe – done!
