How to make… homemade guacamole recipe

April 19, 2014
There are so many iterations of guacamole out there, much of which is just green mush. If you’re like me, you’ll have seen a whole host of elaborate homemade guacamole recipes requiring ingredients you’re unlikely to have in stock.  However, courtesy of my Mexican friend Jonathan, I’ve got the simplest – and best – guacamole recipe.  It’s fresh, fuss-free, requires minimal ingredients, no blending and tastes amazing.

Ingredients

One ripe avocado, roughly chopped
One tomato, chopped finely
Half an onion, finely diced
One green chilli or some crushed dry red chilli (thought the latter is lethally hot)
A bunch of coriander, chopped

Optional extras
Olive oil
Black pepper
Lemon or lime juice
The extras are very much down to personal preference.  While my friend’s authentic guacamole contains only the key ingredients, I find that a pinch of salt and pepper really brings out the flavour of the avocado.  Lemon juice adds an extra zing, but the downside of this is that it takes away the freshness.

Method

Preparing is super simple.  All you need to do is finely chop up your onion, chilli, tomato, coriander.  Then peel and chop your avocado, keeping the pieces chunky.
And here’s the fuss-free beauty.  Combine all ingredients in a bowl with your hands.  No need for a pestle and mortal to reduce your guacamole to nothing. Bind the ingredients together and serve.
